Hungary, Czech Republic prevent the adoption of EU report against Israel
Hungary and the Czech Republic refused to adopt a report that was critical of Israel in relation to the Palestinian territories in European Union.
The report, which was prepared by 21 heads of European missions in the Palestinian territories, stated that the European Union should categorically oppose the Israeli government's illegal plans to unilaterally change the status of Jerusalem and its borders, noting that Israel has greatly accelerated its pressure and measures against the Palestinian population in the last year.
According to the Hebrew website Ynet, this report is prepared every year and is approved by the European Union. However, Hungarian and Czech representatives objected to the report before transferring it to Brussels, arguing that it was too severe on Israel.
The report recommended that the EU prevent settlers with a history of violence, or those incite acts of violence, from entering European Union territory. It also added that the Israeli restrictions on freedom of movement for EU citizens should be met with a reciprocal punishment.
Turning its focus to Jerusalem, the delegates noted that Palestinian status in Jerusalem has grown increasingly precarious, noting a rise in arrests and pressure on Palestinian institutions, demolition of homes, expansion of Israeli settlements, as well as attacks on Christians and their holy sites and the erosion of the religious status-quo at Al-Aqsa Mosque. They recommended that Palestinians in Jerusalem must be afforded more protection.
The report indicates that there are approximately 340,000 Palestinians living in Jerusalem neighborhoods, constituting 38.5 percent of its population, but only 15 percent of the local budget is allocated to their neighborhoods and that just 45 percent are legal and proper access to clean drinking water in their homes.
The report stressed the need for diplomatic missions of European Union countries to remain consistent with United Nations Resolution 478, which condemned the annexation of East Jerusalem in 1980, in a warning to the apparent intentions of Hungary and the Czech Republic to move their embassies from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem.
Israeli officials condemned the report, accusing the "hostile" European Union mission of Ramallah of trying to promote its agenda.
