Israeli minister cancels attendance in L.A. conference amid protests against judicial overhaul

Israel's Minister of Innovation, Science and Technology Ofir Akunis canceled his participation in a conference sponsored by the Israeli consulate in Los Angeles due to protests by Israeli expats against the judicial reforms led by the government of Benjamin Netanyahu, according to the Israeli news site Ynet.

Akunis arrived in the United States on Tuesday to participate in a conference organized by the consulate entitled "From Start-Up Nation to Scale-Up Nation: Israel's Journey to Global Tech Leadership."

The minister said that he is set to hold important meetings regarding international technology and innovation companies in the United States, and accused "left-wing" demonstrators of thwarting his plans.

The organizers of the demonstration said that ministers from Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu government should "not expect quiet" when they fly to the United States, and that they should brace to be met with protests wherever they visit.

On June 4, ten Israeli ministers from Netanyahu's government are set to address an annual pro-Israel rally in Manhattan, New York City. Opponents of the judicial overhaul are slated to demonstrate there as well.
