A ship carrying 1,687 civilian evacuees from Sudan arrives in Saudi Arabia
On Wednesday, an evacuation ship carrying 1,687 civilians from more than 50 countries who fled violence in Sudan arrived in Jeddah, according to the Saudi Ministry of Foreign Affairs, in the largest rescue operation of its kind carried out by the Kingdom so far.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a statement, "This morning (Wednesday) 13 Saudi citizens arrived in Jeddah, and the number of nationals of brotherly and friendly countries who were evacuated reached about 1,674 people" from 56 countries, noting that they were transported "through one of the ships belonging to the Kingdom."
Battles broke out in Sudan on April 15 between the army led by Lieutenant General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan and the Rapid Support Forces led by Lieutenant General Muhammad Hamdan Dagalo, known as Hamidati, who was an ally of al-Burhan and deputy commander of the army before they became rivals.
The battles killed at least 459 people and injured more than four thousand, according to the United Nations, and put the health care system under enormous pressure to deal with an increasing number of victims. Many are currently facing severe shortages of water, food, medicine, and fuel, in addition to the lack of electricity and the Internet.
A US-brokered ceasefire in Sudan entered its second day, but remains fragile amid eyewitness reports of more air strikes.
Saudi Arabia has previously organized evacuations by sea and air. On Saturday, Saudi Arabia announced the completion of the first evacuation of civilians from Sudan to Jeddah on board a ship that included more than 150 people, including foreign diplomats and officials.
On Monday, a military plane transported about 30 South Koreans to an air base in Jeddah, and a ship evacuated about 200 people of 14 nationalities from the city of Butsudan to a naval base in Jeddah.
In addition to the 13 Saudis, the evacuation process on Wednesday included civilians from countries in the Middle East, Africa, Europe, Asia, North America and Central America, according to the statement of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
The ministry stated, "This brings the total of those who have been evacuated from Sudan since the start of the evacuations to about 2,148 people (114 Saudi citizens, 2,034 people belonging to 62 nationalities)."
