Qatar and the UAE open their embassies within weeks

The official spokesman for the Qatari Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Majid Al-Ansari , confirmed today (Tuesday) that there is positive progress in the meetings of the technical committees between his country and the UAE, and that the two embassies between the two countries are expected to open within weeks.

Al-Ansari stated in a media briefing to the ministry that with regard to relations with the United Arab Emirates, there is positive progress in all meetings of the technical committees that work in full swing and carry out mutual visits to facilitate the opening of embassies as soon as possible, according to a statement by the ministry's media and communication department.

He added that the case is now procedural and these embassies are expected to open within weeks, according to the statement, without giving further details.

This announcement comes after the Qatari Ministry of Foreign Affairs had stated on April 5 that two official delegations from Qatar and the UAE held their fourth meeting in Abu Dhabi to follow up the "Al-Ula" statement issued by the Gulf Summit hosted by the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia in 2021.

The ministry indicated in a statement that the two sides discussed during the meeting joint mechanisms and procedures to implement the "Al-Ula" statement, and stressed the importance of consolidating relations between the two countries and developing joint work in a way that achieves common interests between them.

It also follows the announcement of the Qatari-Bahraini Follow-up Committee on the 12th of this month to restore diplomatic relations between Doha and Manama in accordance with the principles of the United Nations Charter and the provisions of the Vienna Treaty on Diplomatic Relations of 1961, after a meeting held by the committee in Riyadh, according to two simultaneous statements by the foreign ministries of the two countries.

The UAE, along with Saudi Arabia, Bahrain and Egypt, announced in June 2017 the severance of diplomatic relations with Qatar, accusing it of supporting and financing terrorism and interfering in its internal affairs, which Doha strongly denied.

After the reconciliation that took place under the "Al-Ula" agreement at the 41st Gulf Summit in January 2021, Qatar held bilateral discussions with Saudi Arabia, Egypt and the UAE to resolve outstanding issues, and the three countries restored trade relations and transportation with Qatar to their previous state.

Doha also received ambassadors from Egypt and Saudi Arabia and sent its ambassadors to Cairo and Riyadh, while the ambassadors between it and Abu Dhabi and Manama did not return.
