The Israeli embassy in Washington closes its doors and goes on strike

The Israeli embassy in Washington , in an unusual precedent, announced the closure of its doors, Monday, in solidarity with other Israeli diplomatic missions around the world.

"Today (3/27), the Histadrut, the largest trade union in Israel, instructed all government employees to go on strike, including Israeli diplomatic missions around the world, and therefore the Embassy of Israel will be closed today," Elad Stromayer, a spokesman for the Israeli Embassy in Washington, wrote on Twitter. Until further notice, no consular services will be provided."

Israeli embassies and consulates around the world closed their doors on Monday as members of Israel's diplomatic corps joined other civil servants participating in a general strike aimed at forcing Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to suspend his government's judicial reform.

And Israeli media sources reported that Netanyahu is expected to announce a halt to the judicial change that has plunged Israel into massive demonstrations for weeks, as proposed amendments sparked one of the largest protests ever in Israel's history in the last hours.

In the beginning, the demonstrations took place on a weekly basis to stop the project of the prime minister of the largest right-wing government in the history of Israel to amend the judicial system, until they became almost daily in recent days.

The demonstrations, which have been going on for nearly 3 months, intensified on Sunday night, coinciding with the dismissal of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, his partner in the government coalition, Defense Minister Yoav Gallant, from office.

The US administration expressed its dissatisfaction and concern over Gallant's dismissal, in a statement made by President Biden's National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan to the Israeli newspaper Haaretz, according to the newspaper.
