Burkina Faso repatriates 64 of its nationals from Tunisia
Dozens of Burkinabers who were evacuees from Tunisia after being subjected to hostility after a violent speech against sub-Saharan African migrants by President Kais Saied arrived in Ouagadougou on a government-chartered plane on Wednesday, according to an AFP correspondent.
In a speech delivered on February 21, the Tunisian president stressed the need to take "urgent measures" to stop the flow of irregular migrants from sub-Saharan Africa to his country, stressing that this phenomenon leads to "violence and crimes," and denouncing "a criminal project to change the demographics." " in the country.
The 64 returnees were received by relatives and members of the government in Burkina Faso's capital.
"It is our government's responsibility to preserve the security and well-being of its citizens," Minister Kramko Jean-Marie Traoré said, adding that "other groups" could return by the same means.
One of the returnees, Enoussa Gebre, who spent 17 months in Tunisia doing simple jobs, said living in Tunisia "wasn't easy".
"We suffered a lot, lost our jobs and were expelled from our homes," he added.
He explained that people slept for 17 days in the Burkina Faso embassy before returning, and that his "adventure" in Tunisia was over.
Countries in West Africa, Guinea, Mali and Ivory Coast, have also organized flights to bring back their citizens from Tunisia since Said's statements.
