The CIA director is "convinced" that Beijing plans to send weapons to Moscow

(AFP) CIA Director William Burns said Friday he was "convinced" that China plans to send weapons to Russia as part of its war in Ukraine, but the United States has no indication that a decision has been taken or that a decision has been made. No equipment has been delivered.

"We are convinced that Chinese leaders are planning to send lethal equipment," Burns said in an interview with CBS on Sunday.

However, he added, "we did not notice that a final decision was made... We did not notice evidence that they had delivered" weapons to Russia.

The United States has accused China a week ago of planning to supply weapons to Russia to support its attack on Ukraine, which Beijing denies.

According to press information, including that published by the Wall Street Journal, this equipment will be drones and ammunition in particular.

In turn, US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken spoke about the matter directly with the Chinese chief foreign affairs official, Wang Yi, in a tense meeting last Saturday in Munich, on the sidelines of a security conference.

Washington believes that Beijing provides non-lethal equipment to Moscow through Chinese companies.

For his part, National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan told CNN on Sunday that the United States remains "vigilant" in this regard, repeating Washington's warning to Beijing of the "consequences" of such supplies.

"We will continue to send firm messages that sending military aid to Russia at this time ... would be a big mistake and China should not be involved in that," he said.

He stressed that the war in Ukraine involves "serious complications" for the Chinese, but if China decides to take the initiative and supply weapons to Moscow, this will lead to "real costs" for it.
