The Jordanian monarch directs to provide aid to the families of the victims and the injured in Turkey and Syria
Amman - (AFP) - Jordan's King Abdullah II directed his country's government to provide aid to the families of the victims and the injured in Turkey and Syria in the aftermath of the devastating earthquake that hit the two countries and killed more than 2,300 people, according to the latest unfinished toll, according to a statement issued. About the Royal Court Monday.
The statement said that King Abdullah "directed the provision of aid to the families of the victims and the injured in the two countries, through two telegrams of condolence sent to Syrian President Bashar al-Assad and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan."
In the two telegrams, the King expressed his "sincere condolences and sympathy to the Syrian and Turkish presidents and the families of the victims, and his wishes for a speedy recovery for the injured."
On the other hand, a statement issued by the Jordanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs said that Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi made two phone calls to his Turkish counterpart Mevlut Cavusoglu and the Syrian Faisal Al-Miqdad, "during which he offered the Kingdom's condolences for the victims of the catastrophic earthquake that struck several areas in southern Turkey and northern Syria in the two brotherly countries."
Al-Safadi affirmed the Kingdom's "absolute solidarity with the brothers in facing the consequences of the painful earthquake," calling on "God to bless the victims with the abundance of His mercy and to bless the injured with a speedy recovery."
Al-Safadi told his Syrian and Turkish counterparts that "under the direction of King Abdullah II, Jordan will send immediate aid to the brothers to assist in relief and rescue efforts."
The 7.8-magnitude earthquake struck near Gaziantep in southeastern Turkey, Monday, at 04:17 local time (01.17 GMT), at a depth of about 17.9 km, according to the US Geological Survey. It was felt by several neighboring countries, most notably Syria, especially the border areas.
More than 2,300 people have been killed in southern Turkey and Syria. This final toll is expected to rise, as a very large number of people are still under the rubble. Also, snowfall and low temperatures on Monday and Tuesday evening will make it difficult for people who have been displaced by the earthquake, as well as the efforts of rescuers.
