The Lebanese Minister of Economy warns of the collapse of wheat "nonsense" in the port of Beirut

Beirut - (dpa) - The Minister of Economy in the Lebanese caretaker government, Amin Salam, warned today, Thursday, of the possibility of the collapse of the wheat "silos" damaged in the Beirut port explosion due to the fire that broke out a few days ago in its vicinity.

Minister Salam said, in a press conference today, after a tour of the Beirut port, during which he was briefed on the situation of the wheat silos, that “the fire will continue as long as there is grain and fermentation,” warning that “what is happening today constitutes a danger, and if these materials remain inside the silos and the fires are repeated, this will lead to their collapse.” automatically".

He stated that the Council of Ministers "suspensed its decision to demolish the damaged silos in solidarity with the families of the martyrs of the port and in response to calls to wait as long as there is no need for demolition."

"We will follow up on the matter in order to reach solutions, so that no one's life is endangered," he added.

Last April, the Council of Ministers assigned the Council for Development and Reconstruction to supervise the demolition of wheat "silos" in the port of Beirut, based on the recommendations of the committee charged with studying them, on the grounds that they constitute a danger.
The families of the victims of the Beirut port explosion objected to the cabinet’s decision to demolish the wheat silos, and the demolition decision was delayed.
An explosion shook the port of Beirut on August 4, 2020, and resulted in damage to a number of the capital's streets, killing more than 200 people, injuring more than six thousand, and leaving 300,000 people homeless, and it is not yet known how the explosion occurred and who caused it.
