The prisoner Iyad Harbiat.. a living example of the prisoners' suffering

Jenin - "Jerusalem" dot com - Ali Samoudi - The prisoner, Iyad Ahmed Harbiat (41 years), embodies a model of what freedom fighters are subjected to, from a programmed execution by the Israeli prison administration, as he suffered from serious complications that reached the point of real death after he was subjected to memory loss and coma. Because of a syringe with an unknown needle and the wrong treatment, and after a journey of bitter suffering and patience over 21 years, and the support and uprising of the prisoners , he overcame the tragedies and woes, and returned to practicing his life like all the prisoners, but he still needs care, treatment and follow-up that the prison administration refuses to provide, leaving him permanently vulnerable to complications.

Iyad is considered the first child of his family consisting of 11 members. He was born, raised, and lived in the city of Dura, Hebron Governorate. He learned in its schools, then finished high school at Al-Arroub Agricultural School. He joined An-Najah National University, majoring in agricultural engineering, but the occupation cut him off and prevented him from completing his university career and graduating.

His brother Youssef told Al-Quds.com, "Because of his activity and his active role in resisting the occupation, his name was included in the wanted list. Despite being targeted, he completed his university and was keen to hide. He was subjected to an assassination attempt by the occupation planes in Tulkarm camp, and he miraculously escaped death."

He added: "After a year-long chase, the Special Undercover Units kidnapped him on 9/21/2002, from the campus of An-Najah National University, without anyone noticing what happened with him, and there was no news of him and the family was unable to know his fate."

And he continues: "We lived through nightmares and a terrible spiral of terror, and we did not know if he was alive or dead, and after two years we received news from the Red Cross that he was detained in the investigation cellars."

Youssef narrates: "The occupation prevented the family from seeing Iyad even in court sessions, and he was subjected to a closed military court and sentenced at that time to life imprisonment in addition to 20 years."

And he adds: "Through the stations of his captivity, my brother moved between all Israeli prisons, and he was punished by isolation in solitary cells more than living in prisons with his fellow prisoners. Isolating him from the outside world was the most difficult thing for him, as he was subjected to penalties of deprivation of visits, clothes and two canteens."

Youssef continues: "Nevertheless, before he fell ill, he was able to complete his undergraduate studies in political science at the Hebrew Open University and obtained his bachelor's degree. He aspires to complete a master's degree in the same major, but the occupation punishes him and prevents him from continuing his studies."

Before and at the beginning of his arrest, Iyad did not suffer from any health problems or diseases, but the major catastrophe befell his life in 2013, and Youssef reports: “The prison clinic doctor injected him with an unknown needle that destroyed his health, structure and life, and led to the loss of his memory so that he did not recognize his mother during the visit ".

And he says, "That stage was very painful and difficult for my mother, who was eagerly awaiting that visit of her son, and discovered that he had lost his memory and did not recognize her. Despite that, the administration did not care about his condition and neglected his treatment, and even targeted him again."

Youssef explained that the forces of repression, during their storming of the section where Iyad is being held in Raymond prison in 2017, deliberately sprayed his brother with a toxic substance that caused burns throughout his body and complete paralysis of the limbs, and the burn marks are still on his body.

He says: "After this crime, he did not receive any treatment and was isolated from the prisoners, and as soon as the news reached them, his comrades rose up and carried out protest activities, demanding his treatment, but the administration deceived them, and instead of transferring him to the hospital, they moved him to the Ramla cemetery for the living."

He adds: "The prisoners donated treatment to him, but in return the only treatment from the administration was olive oil as a massage for Iyad, but the prisoners took care of him, treated him, and supported him to protect him from body stiffness and paralysis, and with patience and perseverance he was able to move his right and left hands and his right foot, but he needs treatments and massages." intense and continuous.

And he continues: "Thanks to the prisoners standing with him, Iyad underwent treatment, and he took 14 pills a day, but it caused him sediment, and in 2021 he began to suffer from urinary incontinence."

Youssef recalls: “The prison administration tried to kill my brother again through deliberate negligence. After terrible pain, during which he lost the ability to sleep, and after suffering 10 continuous days of pain, he was transferred to the clinic in Raymond Prison, and a “Perpeg” was put in place for urine incorrectly. The discharge of urine is external and has become internal to the body.

He added, "Four days after the implant was placed, the tube exploded, causing bleeding that lasted for many hours. The prisoners began asking the administration to place Iyad from 3:00 am until 8:00 am in the clinic, but to no avail."

And he continues: "At that time, Iyad lost consciousness, and the prisoners burned Raymond prison, to pressure the administration to transfer him to the hospital for treatment, and after the protest, they transferred him to Siruka Hospital in Al-Bosta."

And he continues: "When my brother arrived at the hospital, he had bled a lot, lost all fluids from his body, and his heart had stopped and was resuscitated, after which he underwent more than 20 operations, including: removing all the membranes surrounding the intestines and organs, and the lung stopped working by 80%, As a result of the presence of mold and bacteria, caused by a medical error."

After 75 days of coma, the scene changed and he returned to life, and his brother says: "By a miracle from God Almighty, Iyad woke up, and my mother was summoned in order to find out whether he knew her or not.

The prisoner Iyad is currently in the Ramla clinic, and his brother says: "His pain continues and the medical neglect has not ended, but praise be to God after all that suffering and diseases, for he defied all the difficulties, the occupation, the jailer, his oppression and his punishments with his great faith in the Lord of the Worlds."

Youssef says: "We are all waiting for the date of his visit and seeing him, but the occupation always makes us uncomfortable, as I am now forbidden to visit him except once every 3 months, while my sick and elderly father is now rejected by the security forces."

He added: "Every day, my mother sits in front of our house, waiting to see him free and return to her arms, to wipe away the sorrows of life and the pain of absence, and replace the tears of separation with songs of joy, instead of a wedding, and songs of freedom and victory over the occupation and its prisons."
