Six Thai Navy personnel were killed when their ship sank
Prachuap Khiri Khan ( Thailand ) - (AFP) - Rescue teams recovered six bodies and found a survivor two days after a warship sank in the Gulf of Thailand, the Thai navy announced Tuesday.
And rescued 76 marines who were on board the ship Sukhothai, which sank on Sunday evening at a distance of 37 km off the coast of southeastern Thailand.
And 23 crew members are still missing, according to a spokesman.
Search and rescue efforts continued on Tuesday, with the participation of helicopters, two planes and four Navy ships.
After announcing the recovery of the bodies of four men, the Navy confirmed the death toll had risen to six.
"We will continue our efforts until the end of the mission and the return of our personnel," said Chief of Staff of the Royal Thai Navy, Choengchai Chomchongpet, at a press conference in Bangkok.
The Sukhothai had additional personnel on board as it was on its way to participate in a ceremony commemorating the founder of the navy, according to Chungchai, who admitted that the number of life jackets on board was not enough.
For his part, Admiral Chunlathi Navanoograha said the incident was "one of the worst tragedies" in the history of the navy.
The ship was sailing in rough seas and encountered problems after its electronic system failed and water leaked into the cabin.
