The death toll from the rains in Sudan has risen to 79, and about 35,000 homes have collapsed
KHARTOUM, (Xinhua) -- The Sudanese official authorities announced today (Saturday) that the death toll from torrential rains and torrents has risen to 79, while the unprecedented rains led to the complete or partial collapse of about 35,000 houses.
The National Council for Civil Defense in Sudan said, in a statement today (Saturday), "The death toll from the torrential rains caused by the heavy rains has reached 79, and about 30 people have been injured."
He added, "Tens of thousands of homes have been damaged, especially in Gezira state, (central Sudan), and more than 35,000 houses have collapsed completely or partially."
An emergency meeting of the National Council for Civil Defense, chaired by the Sudanese Minister of Interior-designate, Lieutenant General Anan Hamed, recommended that all available shelter materials be listed and distributed urgently to the states most affected by torrential rains, which are the states (Nahral-Nil, Al-Jazeera, Kassala, Sennar).
In the context, the Sudanese Meteorological Authority warned of unprecedented rates of rain this year.
And she said in a press statement today, "This year's rainy season is higher than the expected rates, and most of the states of Sudan will witness high rates of rain, which requires caution and caution, especially in low-lying areas that are heavily flooded."
The Sudanese army announced the intervention of units affiliated with it to evacuate and rescue those affected by the rains in the area (Al-Manaqil) in Gezira State, in central Sudan.
"The army, through the Air Force and the Corps of Engineers, sent helicopters, rescue boats and groups of special forces to assist the local authorities in the Gezira State in search, rescue and evacuation operations for citizens affected by the torrential rains in Al-Managil locality," the Sudanese army spokesman's office said in a press statement.
Within the framework of regional support for Sudan, Qatar's ambassador to Sudan, Abdul Rahman Al-Kubaisi, announced the arrival of two aid planes to provide relief to those affected by the torrential rains.
He said in a press statement in Khartoum today (Saturday), "Two planes will arrive at Khartoum airport tomorrow morning (Sunday) loaded with urgent shelter and food aid for those affected by torrential rains in the states of Gezira and River Nile."
He explained that the foodstuffs will be directed to those affected in the state of Gezira, while tents and shelter supplies will be distributed to the affected families in the states of River Nile and Gezira through the technical field teams of the Qatar Charity Organization.
Wide areas of Sudan are witnessing unprecedented rates of rain, which has led to the destruction of a large number of homes.
And the United Nations announced, in its latest report yesterday (Friday), that about 136,000 Sudanese in various regions of the country have been affected by the torrential rains and torrential rains, since last June.
Sudan witnesses annually, and during the period from June to October, waves of torrents and floods due to rainfall.
