The death toll from the Al-Shabaab attack on a hotel in Mogadishu has risen to 13
Mogadishu , (AFP) - The death toll from the attack launched by members of the Islamic Youth Movement on a hotel in the Somali capital, Mogadishu, has risen to 13, according to a security commander on Saturday.
"We are receiving information about confirming the killing of five more victims, which raises the total number of civilians killed by terrorists to 13," Mohamed Abdel Qader told AFP.
Police officer Ibrahim Duwali also confirmed the killing of ten people, but indicated that the police will publish updated information once the siege of the Al-Hayat Hotel ends.
He stated that most of the civilians who were in the hotel when the attack occurred on Friday night were rescued.
"The security forces will announce at any moment the end of the siege," he told AFP. "It took a long time because of the complexity of the rescue mission."
The director of the main trauma hospital in Mogadishu, Mohamed Abd al-Rahman Jama, said the facility was treating at least 40 people who were injured in the hotel attack and in a separate mortar strike in another area of the capital.
