Tehran Threatens to Withdraw from MOU with Washington Amid Military Escalation in Hormuz

The Islamic Republic of Iran has issued a stern warning to the American administration, asserting that it may cease fulfilling its obligations stipulated in the joint Memorandum of Understanding. This stance was articulated by Iran's Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Amir Saeid Iravani, who emphasized that continued American violations are pushing Tehran towards disengaging from its reciprocal commitments.

Iravani clarified in a statement broadcast by official media that Iran's adherence to the memorandum is contingent on Washington's honest and fully responsible implementation of its promises. The Iranian representative indicated that recent attacks by US forces constitute a blatant violation of Iranian sovereignty and territorial integrity, placing fragile agreements on the brink of collapse.

These developments come amidst escalating field tensions in the Strait of Hormuz region, where both sides have exchanged military strikes over the past few days. This field escalation directly threatens the course of diplomatic talks that began after the ceasefire last April, and international mediators are striving to prevent the situation from sliding into a full-scale confrontation.

On the diplomatic front, sources reported that efforts made in the previous two rounds of negotiations in Switzerland and Qatar have not yielded tangible results so far. While discussions in Switzerland were direct, meetings in Doha took place through mediators, yet the gap between Tehran's demands and Washington's conditions continues to widen, hindering any real progress.

For its part, the American administration is adopting a dual strategy based on military escalation while keeping diplomatic channels open to a minimum. Washington insists that the implementation of understandings is linked to clear security guarantees, especially regarding freedom of international navigation and the cessation of military activities targeting commercial vessels in vital waterways.

In a related context, media sources quoted US President Donald Trump vowing an unprecedented military response that could be twenty times greater if ships are subjected to any new attack. Trump refused to distinguish between deliberate attacks or those that might occur by mistake, demanding that Tehran issue an official statement guaranteeing the permanent opening of the Strait of Hormuz.

Observers in Washington believe that Tehran's failure to adhere to what they describe as 'the simplest terms of the memorandum' raises deep doubts about the feasibility of any future nuclear agreement. American political circles consider that continued maritime provocations undermine opportunities to return to the negotiating table and place the current administration under internal pressure to impose further economic sanctions.

Regarding personal threats, Trump revealed that he had issued special instructions to the military and security agencies to deal with any assassination attempts that might target him, accusing Iran of placing him at the top of its target list. Despite the absence of confirmed intelligence information about imminent plots, Trump continues to use these threats in his political discourse to highlight the magnitude of security challenges facing his country.

If the United States continues to violate its commitments under the Memorandum of Understanding, Iran will not consider itself bound by its commitments under this understanding.
