Occupation authorities release 14 detainees from Gaza amid international calls to open prisons for inspection

The Israeli occupation authorities today, Sunday, released a new batch of 14 Palestinian detainees from the Gaza Strip via the Kerem Shalom commercial crossing. Immediately upon their arrival, teams from the International Committee of the Red Cross took on the task of facilitating the transfer of the released individuals to Al-Aqsa Martyrs Hospital in Deir al-Balah for necessary medical examinations. The organization also worked to ensure their communication with their families after long periods of separation.

The International Committee of the Red Cross revealed in an official statement that it has been able to facilitate the return and transfer of more than 2,500 Palestinian detainees since the beginning of 2023 until now, within the established mechanisms. Sources confirmed that these operations come amidst complex humanitarian conditions faced by prisoners inside detention centers, which requires immediate health care for the released individuals upon their exit from prisons.

In a related context, the international organization renewed its complaint about the continued prevention of its teams from accessing Israeli detention centers since October 2023. The Committee demanded the necessity of revealing the fate of all detainees and their whereabouts transparently, emphasizing the importance of allowing it to resume its inspection and monitoring duties inside prisons to ensure the safety of the detainees.

International sources stressed that the rules of international humanitarian law impose clear obligations on the occupation authorities to treat detainees humanely and preserve their dignity. This includes providing an appropriate detention environment with basic necessities of life, in addition to ensuring their inherent right to continuous communication with their families and informing their families about their health and legal conditions.

Thousands of Palestinian families in the Gaza Strip and the West Bank live in a state of existential anxiety as a result of the systematic Israeli blackout regarding the fate of their children inside prisons. The International Committee affirmed its continued dialogue with the Israeli authorities to secure the right to official visits, considering that the absence of information constitutes a blatant violation of human rights and increases the psychological suffering of the detainees' families.

International humanitarian law mandates humane and dignified treatment of detainees, providing appropriate detention conditions, and enabling them to communicate with their families.
