Elias, the son of the imprisoned Palestinian doctor Hussam Abu Safiya, stated that the leaked photo of his father during his court session on Wednesday revealed a tragic reality he is living inside the occupation prisons. Elias explained that his father's features showed clear signs of torture on his face, in addition to a widespread skin disease that reached his hands, considering these scenes to be conclusive evidence of the violations prisoners are subjected to.
The occupied city of Jerusalem witnessed the first session for Dr. Abu Safiya since news of him was cut off for more than a full year, as he appeared before the court via video conference from inside his cell. The doctor appeared in a difficult health condition, handcuffed, in a scene that caused widespread indignation among his family and those following his case, who affirmed that the occupation deliberately conceals the true condition of prisoners behind bars.
During the session, Dr. Abu Safiya sent a direct message demanding an end to his suffering and his immediate release, describing the measures taken against him as an unjust and arbitrary arrest that lacks any legal basis. Defense lawyer Nasser Abu Odeh conveyed his client's insistence on his innocence and the necessity for human rights organizations to intervene to stop the excesses practiced against him and against detained medical personnel.
For his part, lawyer Abu Odeh indicated in statements following the session that the court did not make a final decision regarding the doctor's legal status, as it decided to postpone ruling on the continuation of his detention for a short period that may extend for a few hours or days. The family and medical circles are awaiting this decision cautiously, amid serious fears for his life as a result of deliberate medical negligence and the apparent effects of torture.
My arrest is unjust and arbitrary, and I demand my immediate release.
