The Beersheba Central Court, affiliated with the Israeli occupation, approved on Tuesday the extension of the detention of Dr. Hussam Abu Safiya, director of Kamal Adwan Hospital in the northern Gaza Strip. This decision was made under the so-called 'Unlawful Combatants Law,' as the court rejected the defense team's request for his immediate release despite no official indictment being filed against him since his arrest.
Human rights sources reported that Dr. Abu Safiya faces extremely harsh detention conditions inside the Naqab desert prison, where he is deprived of essential medications and necessary medical care. Reports indicated that the hospital director's health has significantly deteriorated recently, raising serious concerns for his life in light of the systematic medical negligence policy.
Occupation forces abducted Dr. Abu Safiya in December 2024, during the ongoing military operations and the war of extermination waged by the occupation on the Gaza Strip. Since then, Israeli authorities have continued to renew his detention periodically and automatically, relying on laws that allow the imprisonment of Palestinians for indefinite periods without subjecting them to fair or public trial procedures.
International human rights organizations classify this type of arrest as an arbitrary measure that flagrantly violates international humanitarian and legal standards. Dr. Hussam Abu Safiya is considered one of the medical figures who insisted on continuing to work and provide relief services at Kamal Adwan Hospital under bombardment and siege, refusing to abandon patients and the wounded despite the direct threats faced by the medical facility.
The extension decision came without a specified duration, and Abu Safiya is currently held in Naqab Prison under harsh conditions without access to his medications.
