Criticism of the Upcoming Occupation Government Session Agenda and Its Focus on Protecting Netanyahu

Israeli media criticized the focus of the upcoming government session on discussing threats to the life of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, while there are still about fifty Israeli prisoners held by the resistance in Gaza, two of whom recently appeared in recordings in a state of severe weakness.

According to Yedioth Ahronoth, the session originally scheduled for Sunday will instead be held on Monday, coinciding with the fast of "Tisha B'Av," and will address the issue of "incitement and threats to the lives of Netanyahu and his family, and the need to enhance protection for them."

This issue was raised by ministers from the Likud party, including Yariv Levin, Orit Struck, Yoav Kish, and Miki Zohar, following the arrest of Tamar Gershoni (73 years old), who is accused of planning to assassinate Netanyahu using an RPG.

In contrast, opposition leader Yair Lapid criticized this approach, saying: "On the government's agenda on Monday, for the seventh consecutive time, is a discussion about threats to Netanyahu's life, even though he is the most guarded person in Israel." He added: "I suggest replacing this discussion with a discussion about the more realistic threats to the life of prisoner Aviv David."

Additionally, the government will discuss the issue of dismissing the government’s legal advisor, Gali Baharav-Miara, which has drawn criticism from occupation president Isaac Herzog, who said: "I read that the decision to postpone the discussion on her dismissal was aimed at not increasing division before Tisha B'Av, but there is no justification for increasing it afterward."

Herzog added: "This day should be a time for reflection and demonstrating restraint throughout the year." He continued: "I have previously announced my opposition to the dismissal of the advisor, and I affirm that those who threaten that there is a 'Tisha B'Av' for everything have learned nothing from historical lessons."

He also emphasized the importance of learning from the mistakes that led to a wide segment of the public feeling unheard in their suffering, especially with the passage of 20 years since the withdrawal from Gaza. He called for a pause before making decisions that could disrupt unity and the necessity to avoid hate speech and threats that could lead to violence, while also stressing the need for responsibility and maintaining common ground.
