Former Officials in Mossad and Shin Bet Urge Trump to Pressure for an End to the War in Gaza

Former officials in Israeli security agencies, including Mossad and Shin Bet, and the military presidency, have called on former U.S. President Donald Trump to pressure Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to end military operations in the Gaza Strip, according to the Israeli newspaper "Jerusalem Post."

The newspaper published a letter addressed to Trump from a group called "Leaders for Israel's Security," which includes over 600 senior former security officials, containing a clear call for Trump to take decisive action to end the ongoing war in Gaza. The letter included signatures from former Mossad chief Tamir Pardo, former Shin Bet chief Avi Dichter, and former Deputy Chief of Staff of the Israeli army Matan Vilnai.

The text of the letter states that the group is asking Trump to "stop the Gaza war," noting that this comes on behalf of the largest gathering of former military and security leaders, who affirmed that the time has come to end military operations in the sector, as they did previously in Lebanon. The group emphasized that Trump's credibility with the majority of Israelis gives him the ability to direct Netanyahu and his government towards ending the war, releasing the prisoners, alleviating the suffering of the population, and forming an international regional coalition to support the Palestinian Authority in providing an alternative to Hamas.

Regarding potential steps if Hamas refuses negotiations, senior officials clarified that what is needed is for Israel to announce its readiness to end the war in exchange for the return of all detained prisoners, a proposal that Hamas had made since the beginning of the conflict. The group also called for acceptance of the proposed international framework, which stipulates that Egypt, the UAE, and Saudi Arabia, along with a restructured Palestinian Authority, would manage Gaza after the war ends.

Opposition officials reported that Netanyahu might intervene to maintain his government if Israel were to strike such a deal with Hamas, but he has rejected this option, as he also refuses to grant the Palestinian Authority a foothold in Gaza, given his strong opposition to any efforts that could lead to the establishment of a Palestinian state, even if it were under the Authority's management and not Hamas's.
