Josep Borrell, the former High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, criticized Europe's silence regarding the crimes committed by the Israeli occupation army against Palestinians, considering that this silence has allowed the continuation of genocidal operations without the old continent taking any deterrent measures, which threatens its credibility and undermines the principles it claims to defend.

In an article published in the British newspaper The Guardian, Borrell confirmed that international courts will not issue their final rulings for years, despite the fact that the occupation government is committing genocide in Gaza, where civilians are subjected to starvation and destruction after the systematic destruction of their infrastructure. He pointed out that settlers and the occupation army continue their grave and repeated violations of international law and international humanitarian law in the West Bank and East Jerusalem, which constitutes a flagrant violation of human rights and international legitimacy decisions.

Borrell explained that those who do not act to stop this genocide and violations, despite having the ability to do so, are indirectly participating in the responsibility for it and are complicit in the crimes of the occupation. He emphasized that the European Union has powerful tools it can use to influence the occupation government, as it is its largest trading partner, a key partner in investment and trade exchange, in addition to being one of its main arms suppliers.

He noted that the partnership agreement between the European Union and the occupation grants the latter many privileges, but its second article stipulates respect for international law and fundamental human rights, making non-compliance with it a serious violation of this agreement, harming the EU's geopolitical standing at both the regional and international levels. He confirmed that the EU's continued failure to suspend the agreement, despite Israel's violations, tarnishes the continent's reputation and undermines the multilateral system it is supposed to defend.

Borrell also pointed out that the European Union continues to ship weapons to Israel, despite the war crimes and crimes against humanity committed in Gaza, and its refusal to ban imports from illegal settlements despite decisions from the International Court of Justice. He indicated that the failure to impose sanctions on Israeli ministers and leaders who make genocidal statements, and the failure to prevent Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu from using European airspace despite the arrest warrant issued by the International Criminal Court, reflects clear complicity with the crimes of the occupation.
