The Egyptian presidency announced on Sunday that a tripartite summit will be held in Cairo, bringing together Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi, his French counterpart, Emmanuel Macron, and Jordanian King Abdullah II, to discuss ways to achieve an immediate ceasefire in the Gaza Strip and ensure the entry of urgent humanitarian aid into the territory.
The Egyptian presidency stated in a statement that "President Sisi received a phone call today from President Macron." The statement explained that "the call addressed bilateral relations between the two countries and ways to strengthen them, as part of preparations for the French president's upcoming visit to Egypt."
The statement added that the two presidents "discussed the most important cooperation topics raised during the visit and prospects for enhancing them in a manner consistent with the interests of the two friendly countries, including the possibility of holding a tripartite Egyptian-French-Jordanian summit in Cairo during the French president's visit to Egypt."
Egyptian presidential spokesman Ambassador Mohamed El-Shenawy stated that "the call addressed developments in the Gaza Strip, where Egyptian efforts to achieve a ceasefire in the Strip were reviewed."
The statement stressed that "the two presidents were keen to emphasize the importance of restoring calm through an immediate ceasefire and the provision of humanitarian aid," and that "they emphasized the importance of the two-state solution as the only guarantee for achieving lasting peace in the region."
