Cairo: Riyadh meeting on Friday to discuss the Palestinian issue
The Egyptian presidency said on Thursday evening that the Riyadh meeting scheduled for tomorrow, Friday, will discuss the Palestinian issue with the participation of the leaders of Egypt, Saudi Arabia, the Emirates, Qatar, Kuwait, Bahrain and Jordan.
This came in a statement by the Egyptian presidency, stating that President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi arrived in Riyadh on Thursday, on an indefinite visit.
The presidency said that Sisi arrived in Riyadh "to participate in an informal meeting on the Palestinian issue, with the participation of the leaders of Egypt, Saudi Arabia, the Emirates, Qatar, Kuwait, Bahrain and Jordan," without further details.
Earlier on Thursday, the official Saudi Press Agency revealed that a meeting will be held between the leaders of the Gulf states, Egypt and Jordan in Riyadh tomorrow, Friday, at the invitation of Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.
Quoting an unnamed "official" source, the agency said, "At the invitation of Prince Mohammed bin Salman, Crown Prince and Prime Minister, he will meet in Riyadh on Friday with the leaders of the Gulf Cooperation Council countries, the King of Jordan and the President of Egypt."
She said that the meeting was "brotherly, informal" and came within the context of "special friendly meetings that have been held periodically for many years" between the leaders of the Gulf Cooperation Council, Egypt and Jordan.
She pointed out that the upcoming meeting will be "within the framework of the close fraternal relations that bring together the leaders and that contribute to enhancing cooperation and coordination between the GCC countries, Jordan and Egypt."
She stressed that any decisions regarding joint Arab action will be issued "on the agenda of the upcoming emergency Arab summit" hosted by Egypt next March.
Egypt announced on Tuesday that it has set March 4 as the new date for the emergency Arab summit on developments in Palestine, instead of February 27, for “preparatory and logistical” reasons.
Since January 25, US President Donald Trump has been promoting a plan to displace Palestinians from Gaza to neighboring countries such as Egypt and Jordan, which was rejected by both countries, and was joined by other Arab countries and regional and international organizations.
Egypt is working to formulate and propose a comprehensive Arab plan to rebuild Gaza without displacing Palestinians from it, for fear of liquidating the Palestinian cause through displacement.
