French sources: Ceasefire agreement in Lebanon has entered a new "dynamic"

Agence France-Presse quoted French sources as saying, on Friday, that the implementation of the ceasefire agreement in Lebanon has entered into a "dynamic" that allows the start of the withdrawal of Israeli forces and the deployment of the Lebanese army in the south of the country "on a large scale."

A French official, who requested anonymity, said that the joint visit of French Ministers of the Armed Forces and Foreign Affairs, Sébastien Lecornu and Jean-Noël Barrot, and then of US envoy Amos Hochstein to Lebanon on January 6, “gave new momentum.”

He added that this "gave political support to the mechanism and allowed for the actual start of a large-scale withdrawal of Israeli forces and the deployment of Lebanese forces south of the Litani River."

A ceasefire went into effect on November 27 between Israel and Hezbollah after more than a year of hostilities, including two months of full-scale war, during which Israel carried out a ground offensive in southern Lebanon.

Under the ceasefire agreement, the Lebanese army is to deploy alongside peacekeepers in the south, while the Israeli army withdraws over a 60-day period ending on January 26.

A monitoring mechanism comprising France, the United States, Lebanon, Israel and the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) was established to monitor its implementation.

So far, 4,500 Lebanese army soldiers have been deployed in southern Lebanon, with the number set to reach 10,000, while a third of the Israeli forces in Lebanon have withdrawn.

"In the remaining 15 days, progress can be made," another French official said, referring to the 60 days set for the Israeli withdrawal.

Meanwhile, "the Israelis continue to destroy Hezbollah's infrastructure," such as tunnels, he said.

He added that the number of recorded violations of the ceasefire - more than fifty according to Beirut in the week following the start of the truce - "decreased on both sides."

The official stressed that Hezbollah "currently respects the obligation not to be present south of the Litani River" and the "actual contribution" of the Lebanese army in dismantling the party's infrastructure in the region.

The agreement is based on the implementation of UN Resolution 1701, which stipulates the deployment of the Lebanese army and the United Nations force exclusively in southern Lebanon.
