US Senator Bernie Sanders called on Washington to stop arms and ammunition sales to Israel, in light of the escalating humanitarian crisis in the Gaza Strip, which is being subjected to a genocidal war.

“The United States should not be sending more bombs to the extremist Netanyahu government, which has already killed 45,000 people; destroyed Gaza’s housing, health care, and education systems; and caused famine by blocking humanitarian aid,” Sanders said in a post on Twitter on Monday.

He stressed that he would do everything in his power to prevent US arms sales to Israel.

In parallel with Washington's unconditional support for the genocide in Gaza, US officials informally informed Congress on January 4 of a proposed $8 billion arms deal for Israel, including warplanes and artillery ammunition.

The proposed deal, which requires congressional approval, includes critical defense equipment and munitions such as drones, 155mm artillery shells, small-sized bombs, 500kg warheads, bomb detonators, as well as air defenses such as AIM-120C-8 AMRAAM missiles.

With American support, Israel has been committing genocide in Gaza since October 7, 2023, leaving about 155,000 Palestinians dead and wounded, most of them children and women, and more than 11,000 missing, amid massive destruction and famine that killed dozens of children and the elderly, in one of the worst humanitarian disasters in the world.

Israel continues its massacres, ignoring two arrest warrants issued by the International Criminal Court on November 21 against Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Defense Minister Yoav Galant, for committing war crimes and crimes against humanity against the Palestinians.
