Sisi, Sullivan, McGurk discuss Gaza ceasefire efforts
- Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi discussed with US National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan and the Middle East and North Africa Coordinator at the US National Security Council, Brett McGurk, efforts to reach a ceasefire agreement in the Gaza Strip.
This came during a meeting in Cairo, attended by Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdel Aati, Egyptian Intelligence Chief Hassan Rashad, and US Ambassador to Cairo Hiro Mustafa Garg, according to a statement by the Egyptian presidency.
Sullivan arrived in Cairo on Saturday on an open-ended visit, coming from Doha after visiting Israel on Thursday, to discuss the ceasefire in Gaza, which Egypt, Qatar and the United States have been mediating for more than a year, amid Israeli obstacles.
Today's meeting addressed "developments in the regional situation, and reviewed the efforts of both sides to reach an agreement for a ceasefire and the exchange of detainees in Gaza."
The Egyptian President stressed "the importance of urgent action to deliver humanitarian aid to the Strip, especially with the onset of winter."
The meeting witnessed "emphasis on the two-state solution as the basic guarantee for achieving peace and stability in the Middle East."
With American support, Israel has been committing genocide in Gaza since October 7, 2023, leaving more than 151,000 Palestinian martyrs and wounded, most of them children and women, and more than 11,000 missing, amid massive destruction and famine that killed dozens of children and the elderly, in one of the worst humanitarian disasters in the world.
The meeting also discussed "reviewing the implementation and ways to maintain the ceasefire agreement in Lebanon as a nucleus for regional calm efforts, as well as developments in the situation in Syria."
In this regard, the Egyptian President stressed the "utmost importance of preserving the unity and territorial integrity of sisterly Syria and the security of its people."
