More than 60 British MPs call for comprehensive sanctions on Israel

More than 60 MPs from seven political parties in Britain have called for comprehensive sanctions to be imposed on Israel for its repeated violations of international law.

This came in a letter sent by MPs, led by independent MPs Richard Burgon and Imran Hussain, to Foreign Secretary David Lammy yesterday, Thursday.

The letter was signed by more than 60 MPs from seven different political parties, including Labour MP Diane Abbott, independent MP John McDonnell, and Green Party co-founder and MP Carla Denyer.

The letter referred to the advisory opinion issued by the International Court of Justice last July, which described the Israeli occupation of the Palestinian territories as illegal, and called for its end as soon as possible.

It said: “We call on the government to impose sanctions and take concrete steps to implement the historic decision of the International Court of Justice on the illegal situation in the occupied Palestinian territories.”

It called for ending trade or investment relations that contribute to Israel maintaining its illegal status in the occupied territories, and avoiding economic or trade agreements related to these areas.

She pointed out that Britain's commitments in the context of international law must be consistent with its actions.
