Netanyahu vows to return to fierce war in Lebanon
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has vowed to return to a fierce war in Lebanon despite the ceasefire agreement Israel signed with Hezbollah. He said the agreement is not an end to the war, but rather a ceasefire that could be short-lived if there is a breach.
Netanyahu told Israel's Channel 14 on Thursday that he had ordered the army to prepare for renewed fighting in Lebanon if the ceasefire agreement was violated. He said that the danger of Hezbollah infiltrating northern Israel by land had been removed because the army had destroyed the military infrastructure above and below ground, he said.
Channel 13 Israel also reported that Netanyahu is holding security consultations tonight to discuss continuing the war on several fronts.
In a related context, the Chief of Staff of the Israeli Army, Herzi Halevi, said, "Hezbollah accepted the agreement out of necessity and weakness, and we will respond to any transgression with fire."
"The residents of the north want the agreement to be implemented firmly so they can return, and this is our commitment to them," Halevi added.
Netanyahu and Halevi's statements come less than two days after a ceasefire agreement between Hezbollah and Israel that began at dawn on Wednesday, amid reports of numerous Israeli violations of the terms of the ceasefire.
The Lebanese army said that Israel violated the ceasefire several times on November 27 and 28, including air violations and targeting Lebanese territory with various weapons.
