Austin warns Iran against 'mistake in responding to Israeli strikes'
US Secretary of State Lloyd Austin warned Iran against responding to recent Israeli strikes.
"Iran should not make the mistake of responding to Israeli strikes, which should mark the end of this exchange," Austin said in a post on his X account.
The US Secretary of Defense indicated that there is an opportunity to resort to diplomacy to ease tensions in the region.
Austin reiterated the United States' support for Israel's security, and stated that they are determined to protect American personnel, facilities, and partners in the region.
On Saturday morning, the Israeli army announced that it had launched a 4-hour attack on Iran, which confirmed that it had successfully confronted "the Zionist entity's attempts to attack some points in Tehran and the country," while the attack led to the killing of 4 Iranian soldiers, according to a statement by the Iranian army.
The attack came after Iran fired more than 180 rockets at Israel in early October, in what Tehran said was "revenge" for the assassinations of Ismail Haniyeh, head of Hamas's political bureau; Hassan Nasrallah, secretary-general of Hezbollah; and Revolutionary Guards commander Abbas Nilforoushan.
