Anger in Tel Aviv.. Lamy: Suspension of British arms shipments to Israel
British Foreign Secretary David Lammy announced on Monday evening the suspension of 30 arms export licenses to Israel, including equipment used in the current Gaza conflict.
Lamy said in a statement that the export licenses that will be suspended include components for fighter jets, helicopters and drones, noting that they will not include components for F-35 aircraft.
He explained that the suspension of arms export licenses to Israel is not a comprehensive arms embargo, stressing that London continues to support Israel's right to defend itself in accordance with international law.
The British Foreign Secretary said: The measure we are taking will not have a tangible impact on Israel's security, and we will continue to work with it to confront the Iranian threat.
He expressed his concern about the escalation in Gaza and the West Bank, saying: Communities face settler violence as the occupation continues.
He pointed out that London is working with everyone to achieve a ceasefire in Gaza and release the hostages.
He said: The nightmare of hostages in Gaza must end and we are very concerned about Israel's operations in the West Bank.
He added: Our assessment is that Israel can do more to ensure that food and medicine reach civilians in Gaza.
Israeli government ministers expressed their anger at the British decision.
Israeli Foreign Minister Israel Katz said he was shocked by the decision, which comes after a series of recent decisions by the British government against Israel.
Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Galant said that this decision comes at a critical time for Israel, which is fighting a war on 7 fronts.
