Qatar discusses Gaza mediation and regional tensions with Iran

Qatari Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani discussed on Monday with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi mediation efforts to cease fire in the Gaza Strip and tensions in the Middle East.

This came during a meeting between the two sides in the capital, Tehran, according to a statement by the Qatari Foreign Ministry, which did not specify details regarding the duration of the visit.

The statement said that the two sides discussed "the latest developments in mediation efforts aimed at reaching a ceasefire agreement, and tensions in the Middle East region."

He added that the two ministers discussed "the latest developments in Gaza and the occupied Palestinian territories."

He explained that the two sides stressed "the importance of putting an end to the crimes of the occupation forces against the Palestinians, ending the war on the Gaza Strip, and stopping the terrorism practiced by settlers in the West Bank, in order to spare the region the risks of escalation."

The statement indicated that the two sides reviewed "cooperation relations between the two countries and ways to support and develop them."

This meeting comes the day after the Israeli army and Hezbollah exchanged the largest attack between them since the beginning of the bombing across the "Blue Line" separating them on October 8.

On Sunday morning, Hezbollah launched 340 rockets towards Israeli military sites as part of the first phase of the response to Tel Aviv’s assassination of its leader Fouad Shukr in late July, while Israeli warplanes launched more than 40 raids on dozens of villages and towns in southern Lebanon, resulting in 3 martyrs.

Israel is awaiting a retaliatory response from Iran, which it accuses of assassinating Hamas political bureau chief Ismail Haniyeh late last month in Tehran.

Qatar, Egypt and the United States are mediating indirect negotiations between Israel and Hamas to reach an agreement to stop the war and exchange prisoners, amid ongoing talks in Cairo on a ceasefire in Gaza.
