Haaretz: International pressure to prevent the arrest of Netanyahu and Galant

The Hebrew newspaper Haaretz reported on Wednesday that there is pressure being exerted by several countries and parties on the International Criminal Court to prevent the issuance of arrest warrants against Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, his Minister of Defense Yoav Galant, and senior officers and officials.

According to the Hebrew newspaper, estimates indicate that these pressures may not succeed in light of the judges’ insistence on considering the possibility of issuing such warrants.

Legal experts following the case told the Hebrew newspaper that it is difficult to predict the extent to which the pressures will affect the decisions of the committee of judges discussing the issue.

The chief prosecutor of the International Criminal Court in The Hague, Karim Khan, had applied to the judges to issue the arrest warrants about three months ago.

Following Khan's request, a series of countries and international organizations submitted legal opinions to the court regarding the arrest warrants.

The judges must now examine the application and the opinion in order to make a decision on the case, but in Israel it is difficult to estimate whether the process will last days, weeks or months.
