Safadi and Blinken discuss stopping the escalation in the region and delivering aid to Gaza

Amman and Washington discussed on Friday steps to stop the escalation in the region, and cooperation between them in delivering aid "adequately and immediately" to the Gaza Strip.

This came in the second call between Jordanian Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi and his US counterpart Anthony Blinken within 4 days, according to a statement by the Jordanian Foreign Ministry.

The call comes as Israel has been awaiting a response from Iran and Hezbollah for days to the assassination of Hamas political bureau chief Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran on July 31, and Hezbollah military commander Fouad Shukr in Beirut the day before.

The statement said that Safadi and Blinken followed up on "the talks they held by phone last Tuesday, regarding the dangerous escalation witnessed in the region and the steps required to stop it."

Safadi stressed that "stopping the Israeli aggression on Gaza is the first step that must be achieved towards reducing the escalation that threatens security and peace in the region."

He stressed that "stopping the aggression on Gaza is the goal that all efforts must be combined to achieve and protect because it will save Gaza and its people from the death and destruction imposed on them by the aggression, and will take the region out of the dangerous tension that puts it on the brink of explosion."

Al-Safadi pointed out "the importance of the statement issued by US President Joe Biden, Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi, and Qatari Emir Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, regarding the resumption of negotiations on the exchange deal."

He pointed out that "Jordan supports the statement and its goal of reaching a prisoner exchange deal (between Israel and the Palestinian factions in Gaza) that results in a permanent ceasefire as soon as possible."

A tripartite statement was issued by the American and Egyptian presidents and the Emir of Qatar on Thursday, calling for the resumption of truce negotiations next week, "not to waste time and to begin implementing the ceasefire agreement and prisoner exchange without any delay by any party."

Safadi and Blinken also discussed "cooperation in delivering adequate and immediate aid to Gaza to confront the humanitarian disaster."
