AIPAC Money Defeats One of Palestine's Most Prominent Supporters in Congress
Missouri Democratic Rep. Cori Bush narrowly lost the Democratic primary for Congress on Tuesday to St. Louis Attorney General Wesley Bell, a challenger backed by the pro-Israel lobby group AIPAC, which spent millions of dollars trying to defeat her for no other reason than her pro-Palestinian stance.
The race was the second targeted attack by the American Israel Public Affairs Committee on a member of the band during this cycle.
With election results announced in about 95 percent of constituencies, Khar Bush trailed by less than 6,000 out of 112,000.
The Associated Press called the race two hours after polls closed.
After spending more than $17 million to oust Rep. Jamaal Bowman, a New York Democrat, last July, AIPAC has shifted its focus to ousting Bush. The group has poured more than $8 million into the race to unseat Bush in less than two months.
Outside groups spent $18.2 million in the race. Bill's supporters outspent groups supporting Bush by about four to one. AIPAC's super PAC spent $8.5 million to support Bill's campaign.
The Democratic Majority for Israel Political Action Committee, a front for the Israel lobby, spent half a million dollars and the Democratic Majority PAC, run by major Democratic donor Reid Hoffman, spent $1.5 million to support Bill.
Democrats for Justice and the Working Families Party spent just under $3 million to support Bush.
AIPAC's money has been spent on voter engagement efforts, phone banking, and digital and mail advertising.
Bush's loss represents another victory for a pro-Israel movement that seeks to silence critics of Israel's human rights abuses and its ongoing war on Gaza.
Cori Bush, first elected in 2020, was one of the first members of Congress to call for a ceasefire in Gaza, along with Rep. Rashida Tlaib, Democrat of Michigan, the only Palestinian-American member of Congress.
Tlaib won the primary uncontested on Tuesday after AIPAC's efforts to recruit a challenger failed.
