Tehran receives top Russian security official, delivers message to foreign ambassadors
Russian Security Council Secretary General Sergei Shoigu arrived in Tehran on Monday to hold talks with senior Iranian officials, following the assassination of Hamas political bureau chief Ismail Haniyeh in the Iranian capital.
Shoigu, who previously served as Russia's defense minister, is visiting at the invitation of Iran's Supreme National Security Council Secretary-General Ali Akbar Ahmadian, according to Iran's Tasnim News Agency, which said the visit aims to "strengthen communication and discuss regional and international issues and bilateral security and political relations."
In turn, the Russian RIA Novosti news agency said that Shoigu will discuss with the new Iranian President, Masoud Pezeshkian, and senior military and security officials enhancing bilateral cooperation in many areas, including security.
Russia has strongly condemned the assassination of Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran on July 31.
Israel, which has not officially claimed responsibility for Haniyeh's assassination, has increased the state of alert among its forces and vital facilities to the highest level in anticipation of a response from Iran.
Message to Ambassadors
The Iranian Foreign Ministry summoned ambassadors and heads of diplomatic missions residing in Tehran to a meeting with acting Foreign Minister Ali Bagheri Kani to confirm Iran's determination to respond to Israel.
"Iran seeks to establish stability in the region, but this will not be achieved unless the aggressor is punished and the Zionist regime is deterred from undertaking adventures," ministry spokesman Nasser Kanaani said, adding that Tehran's move was inevitable.
Kanaani called on the United States to stop supporting Israel, saying that the international community had not done its duty to protect the stability of the region, and must support "punishing the aggressor."
The Iranian spokesman also stated that the Organization of Islamic Cooperation will hold an emergency meeting the day after tomorrow, Wednesday, at Tehran's request, to discuss the assassination of Haniyeh and the Iranian response.
