Flights to Beirut airport suspended amid fears of Israeli attack
Several airlines, including Lufthansa, Swiss International Air Lines and Eurowings, announced on Monday (July 29, 2024) the suspension of their flights to the Lebanese capital for two days, as a “precautionary measure” due to “current developments” in the Middle East.
Turkey-based budget airline SunExpress, Turkish Airlines subsidiary A.Jet, Greece's Aegean Airlines, Ethiopian Airlines and Middle East Airlines have also cancelled flights scheduled to arrive in Beirut on Monday, according to FlightRadar24.
Beirut airport’s flight information display and the Flightradar24 flight tracking website showed Turkish Airlines also canceled two flights last night. Middle East Airlines announced on Sunday that some of its flights to Beirut on the same day had been postponed overnight. Additional flight delays were then recorded due to “technical reasons related to the distribution of aircraft insurance risks between Lebanon and other destinations,” according to Middle East Airlines.
Beirut International Airport, or Rafic Hariri Airport, is the only airport in Lebanon. It was targeted during the country's civil war and in previous wars with Israel, including the last war between Hezbollah and Israel in 2006.
Israel has vowed, through more than one official, to respond harshly to Hezbollah. The White House also held the Iranian-allied party responsible for the attack on Majdal Shams. It said in a statement, "This attack was carried out by the Lebanese Hezbollah. It was a missile belonging to them that was launched from an area they control."
