King Abdullah and the British Prime Minister stress the necessity of reaching an immediate ceasefire
King Abdullah II and British Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer stressed in London, yesterday, Tuesday, the necessity of reaching an immediate ceasefire in Gaza, and doubling humanitarian aid to civilians.
During a bilateral meeting followed by an expanded meeting at the British government headquarters, the King and the British Prime Minister discussed bilateral relations, the dangerous developments in the region, and the deteriorating conditions in Gaza.
The King stressed the importance of Britain's role in mobilizing the efforts of all parties to reach a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip and strengthening the humanitarian response to stop the catastrophe that the Gazans are experiencing, pointing out that Jordan will continue to coordinate with Britain to double aid.
He appreciated the British government's recent decision to resume its support for the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) to enable it to carry out its vital and humanitarian role, in accordance with its UN mandate, towards millions of Palestinians in Gaza and the region.
King Abdullah warned of the acts of violence committed by extremist settlers against Palestinians in the West Bank, and the continued violations of Islamic and Christian sanctities in Jerusalem.
He reiterated that the region will remain hostage to violence and instability unless a political horizon is created to achieve a just and comprehensive peace based on the two-state solution, which fulfills the rights of the Palestinian people by establishing their independent state on the lines of June 4, 1967, with East Jerusalem as its capital. He appreciated Britain’s support for the two-state solution.
For his part, the British Prime Minister stressed the depth of Jordanian-British relations, and said, "We are united by a long and common history and we have an opportunity to build on the exceptional cooperation between us."
He pointed out the importance of the meeting, “to discuss many pressing issues of common interest.”
