US official: Washington will resume shipping 500-pound bombs to Israel

A US official announced that President Joe Biden's administration will resume shipping 500-pound bombs to Israel, but will continue to postpone sending 2,000-pound bombs due to concerns about their use in the Gaza Strip.

In May, the United States suspended the shipment of 2,000-pound and 500-pound bombs due to concerns about the impact they could have in Gaza during the war.

The administration's concern was particularly about the possibility of using such large bombs in Rafah, where more than a million Palestinians have taken refuge.

A US official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said: “We have made clear that our concern is about the use of bombs weighing 2,000 pounds, especially in Israel’s operation in Rafah, which they said they were in the process of completing.”

A single two-thousand-pound bomb can penetrate thick layers of concrete and metal, creating an explosion with a wide radius.

The US official explained that the 500-pound bombs were assembled in the same shipment with the larger bombs, which were temporarily suspended and therefore stopped.

He continued by saying: "Our main concern was and remains the possible use of 2,000-pound bombs in Rafah and other areas in Gaza... Because our concern was not related to the 500-pound bombs, it is moving forward as part of the usual process."
