"Israel" rejects the Palestinian Authority's involvement in any way in the Rafah crossing

An American-Egyptian-Israeli meeting in Cairo on reopening the Rafah crossing ended in failure last Sunday, after Israel rejected the Palestinian Authority’s involvement in any way in operating the crossing, according to the Walla website, citing four American and Israeli officials today, Friday.

The Biden administration says that the Gaza Strip will be part of the Palestinian state in the future, and that the Palestinian Authority will have a role in managing the sector after the war, but in all of his meetings with American officials, the Israeli Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, rejected any involvement of the Authority in Gaza, according to “Walla.” ". Netanyahu said during the political-security cabinet meeting last week that he rejects any government involvement in the Rafah crossing.

However, an Israeli official told the site that Netanyahu's statements contradict the policy approved by the war cabinet a few days ago, and that Israel agrees to allow any party except Hamas to operate the crossing.

During the tripartite meeting, the American and Egyptian sides proposed the possibility of reopening the Rafah crossing with the presence of Palestinian employees from Gaza who are not linked to Hamas, and who would be representatives of the Palestinian Authority.

In turn, the Palestinian Authority in Ramallah put together a list of the names of approximately 300 Palestinians from Gaza, after a security check on them and their approval to work at the crossing, according to American officials.

The Israeli delegates said at the meeting that Israel will investigate the identity of the Palestinian employees proposed on the list and will allow those who have no connection to Hamas to operate the crossing alongside a European Union monitoring force that was present at the crossing before Hamas took control of the Gaza Strip in 2007, according to two Israeli officials.

They added that there is no problem with the crossing being occupied by Palestinians belonging to the Fatah movement, but Israel will not agree to them working there as official representatives of the Palestinian Authority.

They proposed that the Palestinians whose names were on the list occupy the crossing as a “local civil committee,” while Egypt and the Authority opposed this Israeli proposal.

Following the failure to reach an agreement, the Egyptian side called in the tripartite meeting to hold another meeting with the participation of the Director of General Intelligence in the Authority, Majed Faraj, but the Israeli side rejected this proposal and said that the Israeli government’s policy is not to hold deliberations on Gaza with the Palestinian Authority, and that they will need to Government approval to hold such a meeting.
