50 UN experts call for imposing immediate sanctions on Israel and stopping the supply of weapons to it

More than 50 UN experts expressed their outrage at the horrific Israeli air strikes on a camp housing displaced civilians in Rafah in Gaza on Wednesday.

These experts issued a joint statement in Geneva condemning the Israeli raids on civilians sheltering in camps in southern Gaza, during which they called for an immediate halt to the flow of weapons to Israel, which they believe are “being used to brutally kill and maim Palestinian civilians.”

Among the UN experts who issued the statement are Paola Gaviria Bettencourt, Special Rapporteur on the human rights of internally displaced persons, Francesca Albanese, Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in the Palestinian Territory occupied since 1967, Michael Fakhri, Special Rapporteur on the right to food, and others.

The experts also condemned the Israeli air strikes on Sunday evening on a camp housing displaced civilians in Tal al-Sultan, northwest of Rafah, which, according to reports, claimed the lives of at least 46 people, including 23 women, children and the elderly.

Experts stated that these attacks constitute a flagrant violation of international law and an attack on human morals. They emphasized that even if Israeli leaders claimed that the strikes were a “mistake,” they still bear international legal responsibility.

The United Nations experts called for an independent international investigation into the attacks on the Rafah camps, and stressed "the need to hold those responsible for these atrocities accountable."

They also called for unimpeded delivery of humanitarian aid to Gaza, an end to the blockade, and the lifting of restrictions on life-saving aid. They also urged "an immediate and permanent ceasefire, along with measures to ensure accountability and secure the basic rights of Palestinians in Gaza."
