Israeli Army: Netanyahu received warnings last year about the cohesion of the state
The Israeli army revealed that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu received four warnings last year about “harm to the cohesion of the state” and the impact this would have on Israel in general and on the army in particular.
The Hebrew Broadcasting Corporation said, on Thursday, that the Israeli army’s announcement came in an official response received by the “Hatzlaha” association in the context of obtaining freedom of information.
It added: “Between March and July 2023, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu received four different warning letters from the Intelligence Division of the Israeli army.”
During that period, Israel was witnessing widespread protests against the government’s decision to push through judicial amendments that caused a wide division in Israel.
The broadcaster indicated that the warnings were related to “Israel’s enemies’ perception of the harm being caused to the cohesion of the state.”
Many political, security and military officials confirmed that the Hamas attack on October 7 on settlements adjacent to the Gaza Strip surprised Israel.
The Israeli Army Intelligence Division has repeatedly announced in recent months that it bears responsibility for the failure to repel the attack.
Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu refuses to bear any responsibility for the failure.
In early January 2024, the Israeli Supreme Court abolished the so-called “limiting reasonableness” law, which Netanyahu had long defended as part of a package of “judicial reform” laws that sparked controversy before the war on Gaza.
The opposition considers these laws a “coup against democracy” and “would turn Israel into a dictatorship,” as they limit the powers of the Supreme Court, which is the highest judicial authority in the country.
