ICJ is considering new emergency measures against Israel
The International Court of Justice said on Tuesday that it will hold hearings on Thursday and Friday to consider new emergency measures requested by South Africa to be imposed due to the Israeli attacks on the city of Rafah in the southern Gaza Strip.
The court, which is based in The Hague, explained that during these sessions it will hear lawyers representing South Africa on Thursday and Israel’s response the next day, as part of an ongoing case in which it also accuses Israel of committing acts of genocide against the Palestinians.
The court said - in a statement - that the State of South Africa considered that the measures previously taken were no longer sufficient in view of developments in the situation on the ground, especially with the Israeli attack on Rafah and its impact on the delivery of humanitarian and medical aid and basic services.
Israel previously claimed that it was acting in accordance with international law in Gaza, and described the genocide case brought by South Africa as baseless and accused it of acting as if it were the “legal arm” of the Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas). Recently, countries including Libya, Egypt and Turkey announced their intention Officially intervened to support South Africa’s lawsuit in the “genocide” case filed against Israel at the International Court of Justice due to its ongoing war on Gaza, while Hamas appreciated the positions of those countries.
