Egypt announces its support for South Africa's lawsuit against Israel before the Court of Justice

Egypt announced yesterday (Sunday) its intention to intervene in support of South Africa's lawsuit against Israel before the International Court of Justice, demanding that Israel comply with its obligations as the occupying power.

Egypt confirmed, in a statement to its Foreign Ministry, its intention to formally intervene to support the lawsuit filed by South Africa against Israel before the International Court of Justice to look into Israel’s violations of its obligations under the Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide in the Gaza Strip.

It explained that the filing of the declaration of intervention in the aforementioned lawsuit comes in light of the worsening severity and scope of the Israeli attacks against Palestinian civilians in the Gaza Strip, and the continued perpetration of systematic practices against the Palestinian people, including direct targeting of civilians and the destruction of infrastructure in the Strip, and pushing the Palestinians into displacement and displacement outside their land. Which led to the creation of an unprecedented humanitarian crisis that led to the creation of unlivable conditions in the Gaza Strip, in flagrant violation of the provisions of international law, international humanitarian law, and the Fourth Geneva Convention of 1949 for the Protection of Civilian Persons in Time of War.

Egypt called on Israel to comply with its obligations as the occupying power, and to implement the interim measures issued by the International Court of Justice, which require ensuring the entry of humanitarian and relief aid in a manner sufficient to meet the needs of the Palestinians in the Gaza Strip, and for Israeli forces not to commit any violations against the Palestinian people, as they are a people protected in accordance with the Convention. Preventing and punishing the crime of genocide.

It renewed its call to the Security Council and influential international parties for the necessity of immediate action to cease the fire in the Gaza Strip and military operations in the Palestinian city of Rafah, and to provide the necessary protection for Palestinian civilians.
The South African presidency said yesterday (Saturday) that the country requested last Friday from the International Court of Justice to issue an urgent order from the court to protect the Palestinian people in Gaza amid the ongoing Israeli military attack on the city of Rafah.

The presidency stated in a statement that South Africa asked the International Court of Justice to adopt additional provisional measures against Israel, including ordering Israel to immediately withdraw and stop its military actions in Rafah, and to take measures to facilitate the arrival of humanitarian aid to Gaza.

South Africa also calls on Israel to submit an open report to the International Court of Justice on all measures it has taken to implement all previous interim measures referred to by the International Court of Justice, according to the statement.

The presidency indicated that "the urgent request comes in the wake of the escalation of the Israeli attack on Rafah, which poses a severe threat to humanitarian supplies and basic services in Gaza, to the continued work of the Palestinian medical system, and to the survival of Palestinians in Gaza as a group."
