Egypt: The peace agreement with Israel is a strategic choice and has mechanisms to address violations
Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry said on Sunday that the peace agreement with Israel is a “strategic choice,” and any violations of it will be addressed through mechanisms, including a military liaison committee.
This came in a press conference held by Shoukry with his Slovenian counterpart, Tanja Vaion, in Cairo, broadcast by the private Cairo News Channel.
Shukri's comment, which is the first by Egypt, came in response to a question about Israel's violation of the agreement signed decades ago, after it took control of the Palestinian side of the Rafah crossing in the southern Gaza Strip.
Shukri said, "The peace agreement with Israel has been Egypt's strategic choice for 40 years, and the main pillar of peace in the region to achieve peace and stability."
He stressed that "the peace agreement with Israel has its own mechanisms that are activated to address any violations, if found, within a technical framework and the Military Liaison Committee."
He added: "We continue to approach this agreement with this perspective."
