Australia: Recognizing the State of Palestine is part of the peace process
Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong expected that recognition of the State of Palestine would be part of the peace process between Israelis and Palestinians.
This came according to what was reported by the Australian channel (ABC) of the Minister of Foreign Affairs’ statements after the United Nations General Assembly adopted on Friday a resolution supporting Palestine’s request for full membership in the United Nations.
Wong pointed to the possibility of Australia recognizing the State of Palestine before concluding formal peace with Israel.
In her statements, she stressed the “yes” vote on the resolution and stated that this was in the interest of the Palestinians and Israelis.
She explained that her country's "yes" vote was not unique in the geographical area and was consistent with what New Zealand, Japan, Indonesia, Singapore and South Korea voted for.
Wong said: “What we want to say is that Australia no longer believes that recognition (the State of Palestine) will come after the peace process. It may be part of the peace process.”
On Friday, the United Nations General Assembly adopted a resolution submitted by the Arab Group and other countries, affirming that the State of Palestine “qualifies for full membership of the United Nations in accordance with Article 4 of the United Nations Charter,” and “should therefore be accepted as a member” of the organization.
