Ben Gvir attacks Gallant and calls on Netanyahu to dismiss him
The Israeli Kan channel reported that the extremist National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir called on Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to immediately dismiss Defense Minister Yoav Gallant, indicating that Gallant is not fit to continue his work as Defense Minister and is not qualified to do so, against the backdrop of appointments to the General Staff of the Israeli Army.
The channel quoted Ben Gvir as saying that Gallant does not have a mandate to appoint the generals and the next general staff for the Israeli army.
For its part, the Israeli newspaper Yedioth Ahronoth revealed, on Thursday, a “serious” disagreement that emerged in recent weeks between Netanyahu and the heads of the security services over the course of the war in the Gaza Strip, including Gallant and Chief of Staff Herzi Halevy.
The newspaper said that the security elite believes that Netanyahu “endangers war gains and causes strategic damage when he is not decisive on five major issues.”
It stated that the issues are “the hostage deal, the issue of the day after the war, the military operation in Rafah, the war of attrition in the north (referring to the confrontations with Hezbollah), and the defense budget allocated to the Gaza war.”
The newspaper indicated that politicians consider Netanyahu “incapable of making decisions” on these issues.
It added that the army asks the Prime Minister and the expanded political and security ministerial council to take clear decisions on these five issues, most notably the issue of detainees in the Gaza Strip.
It pointed out that, according to prominent sources in the security apparatus, Netanyahu’s failure to take a decision in this regard “prevented the Israeli army from acting in a way that would advance the achievement of the war’s goals.”
In this context, the newspaper quoted two senior sources as saying, “If the Prime Minister and the expanded government do not take a decision, the army leaders and Gallant may take steps that have been avoided until now.”
The newspaper continued that, according to the same sources, many senior officials in the Israeli army may announce within a few months their decision to retire due to their role in the failures of last October 7, and this fact makes it easier for them to explain their position to Netanyahu.
The newspaper added that according to them, they “want to end the war by defeating Hamas and removing Hezbollah from the northern border in order to repair the strategic damage to Israel” on October 7.
In the same context, the newspaper quoted the head of the "Israel Our Home" party, Avigdor Lieberman, as saying that Netanyahu had failed and was living illusions by talking about complete victory in Gaza. He added that he had brought Israel to the greatest catastrophe since its establishment, calling for focusing on how to end the war and return the detainees.
