Israel's president claims protests at American universities are "anti-Semitic"
Israeli President Isaac Herzog claimed on Thursday that student protests at American universities, in rejection of his country's ongoing war on the Gaza Strip, constitute "anti-Semitism."
Herzog's office stated that the latter issued "an urgent message of support to Jewish communities around the world, in light of the dramatic resurgence of anti-Semitism," in its estimation.
He added that the letter also comes "in the wake of hostilities and intimidation against Jewish students on campuses throughout the United States in particular."
In his letter, Herzog said, "Prominent academic institutions and halls of history, culture and education are tainted by hatred and anti-Semitism fueled by arrogance and ignorance."
He continued: “In the face of violence, harassment and intimidation, and while masked cowards smash windows, doors and barricades (...) we stand together strong,” as he put it.
Since its outbreak on October 7, 2023, Herzog has been one of the biggest supporters of the war on Gaza, which left more than 112,000 dead and wounded, most of them children and women, and about 10,000 missing amid famine and massive destruction, according to Palestinian and UN data.
For the third week, student movement continues in American and European universities. To demand an end to the war on Gaza, despite the police using tear gas and rubber bullets to disperse protest camps and arrest students.
According to Western laws, including American laws, criticizing the practices of the Israeli occupation is not considered “anti-Semitism.”
Israel continues its war on Gaza despite the issuance of a resolution by the UN Security Council to stop the fighting immediately, and also despite the International Court of Justice demanding immediate measures to prevent acts of “genocide” and improve the humanitarian situation in Gaza.
