South Africa: We are closely following the International Criminal Investigation into Netanyahu
The presidency of the Republic of South Africa announced that its country is closely following the investigation in which the International Criminal Court may issue an arrest warrant against Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
Presidential spokesman Vincent Magwenya said in a press conference on Monday evening that his country expects the International Criminal Court to issue an arrest warrant against Netanyahu within this week.
He added: "We are closely following developments related to the possible arrest warrant. We will praise any intervention by institutions concerned with protecting international law and securing the lives of citizens while taking these measures."
He stressed South Africa's commitment to the principles of international law as a member state of the International Criminal Court, adding: "We believe that no country or individual should be above international law."
Last Sunday, the Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs spoke of “rumors” regarding the possibility that the International Criminal Court might issue “arrest warrants against senior Israeli political and military officials.”
Hebrew media circulated reports indicating the possibility of the International Criminal Court issuing international arrest warrants against Netanyahu, Defense Minister Yoav Galant, and Chief of Staff Herzi Halevy, against the backdrop of Israeli practices during the war on the Gaza Strip.
Israel continues the war on Gaza despite the Security Council issuing a resolution to stop the fighting immediately, and despite the issuance of instructions from the International Court of Justice to take immediate measures to prevent acts of “genocide” and improve the humanitarian situation in Gaza.
For 17 years, Israel has besieged the Gaza Strip, and its war forced about two million of its population, numbering about 2.3 million Palestinians, to flee in catastrophic conditions.
