The US Senate approves $95 billion in aid to Washington's allies
At dawn on Wednesday, the US Senate approved a financial aid package for US allies, a few days after the House of Representatives approved the aid amounting to $95 billion.
The White House said in a statement that the Senate approved the $95 billion aid package, adding: “President Joe Biden pledged to sign the package later today, Wednesday.”
The support will be allocated to supply key US allies, most notably Ukraine and Israel, with weapons and billions of dollars in support.
The legislation, which passed by a vote of 79 to 18, appeared dead for months due to opposition in the GOP-led House of Representatives.
President Biden said in a statement following the Senate approval that he would sign the bill into law as soon as it is placed on his desk on Wednesday, and that he would send aid to Ukraine this week.
The money helps President Biden fulfill his promise to his country’s allies in NATO to continue helping Ukraine as it enters its third year in the war against Russia.
The legislation also sends $26 billion in funds to Israel, and humanitarian aid to Gaza and elsewhere, at a time when some Democrats in Congress are calling for more aid to Israel with conditions.
The Ukrainian funds come at a key juncture for the country in its war with Russia, as Ukrainian forces, suffering from a shortage of ammunition, have begun ceding front-line cities to Russia.
The Pentagon warned months ago that a US failure to arm Ukraine would be "catastrophic and may spur Russian military advances in other neighboring countries."
