Egypt: The Gaza truce negotiations have not yet reached a ceasefire
Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry announced on Monday that the truce negotiations in the Gaza Strip “have not yet reached a point that leads to a ceasefire.”
This came during a press conference held by Shoukry with his Dutch counterpart, Hanke Bruin Sloot, who arrived in Egypt on an indefinite visit, according to what the Cairo News Channel (privately) reported.
Shukri said, “Aid is unable to enter Gaza due to Israel’s measures,” stressing that “any plan to enter aid must be implemented quickly.”
He added: "We demand the necessity of an immediate ceasefire and an increase in aid and we reject any attempt to displace Palestinians from Gaza."
He continued, saying: “We have not yet reached in the negotiations what leads to a ceasefire,” adding: “We hope that the negotiations will lead to a ceasefire.”
Yesterday, Sunday, Cairo News reported, quoting a high-ranking source, whose name it did not mention, that “the truce negotiations in the Gaza Strip were completed on Monday, in Cairo, after the end of the first day with the participation of Egypt, the United States, Qatar, and Hamas,” without further details and without mentioning a reason. Israel's non-participation.
According to Hebrew and international media, the mediators are currently seeking to reduce the areas of disagreement between the two parties regarding the details of the Israeli withdrawal from the Gaza Strip and the identity of the detainees from both sides who are scheduled to be released.
On Sunday, the Hebrew Broadcasting Corporation quoted an unnamed Israeli official as saying that Tel Aviv requires that attendees of the Cairo meetings obtain lists of the names of living Israeli detainees in the Gaza Strip, in order to move forward with the deal.
Arab and international media also reported that Hamas would not provide any details or information regarding its prisoners “without a heavy price that Israel must pay in terms of alleviating the suffering of the people of Gaza and establishing a ceasefire.”
A truce previously prevailed between Hamas and Israel for a week from November 24 to December 1, 2023, during which a ceasefire took place, a prisoner exchange took place, and very limited humanitarian aid was brought into Gaza, with Qatari-Egyptian-American mediation.
