CNN: American concern about an Israeli ground incursion into Lebanon
Officials in the administration of US President Joe Biden revealed growing concern about Israel's planning for a ground incursion into Lebanon that could begin in late spring or early next summer "if diplomatic efforts fail to push Hezbollah to retreat from Lebanon's southern borders."
Today, Thursday, CNN quoted a Biden administration official as saying: “We are working on the assumption that an Israeli military operation will take place in Lebanon in the coming months,” pointing out that the incursion may not take place in the coming weeks, but rather later in this month. the spring. He stressed that the possibility of an Israeli military operation in Lebanon is "clear."
A senior American official told the network that he heard differing opinions within the Israeli government about the necessity of incursion into Lebanon, pointing out that what Israel is doing is raising this threat in the hope of reaching an agreement through diplomacy. He pointed out that other Israeli officials are talking about this as a "military necessity that will happen."
Another senior official in the Biden administration confirmed that officials within the Israeli government and army support the incursion, warning, at the same time, that any incursion into Lebanon could lead to “a very large escalation whose size we do not know.”
The United States calls for a focus on diplomacy to find a solution to the military escalation in Lebanon, after Israel warned that it would continue to pursue Hezbollah even if a ceasefire was agreed upon in Gaza. US State Department spokesman Matthew Miller told reporters on Tuesday: “We do not want to see either side escalating the conflict in the north.”
